Have you ever had a problem searching for a specific video clip based on its name? Have you ever spent hours searching sites like YouTube or Vimeo without finding what you’re looking for? If so, here is a new alternative for you: the Blinkx site.
Blinkx is the world’s largest and most advanced video search engine, which applies an innovative searching technique that is completely different from other video search sites. Other websites only search metadata – that is to say they search the text associated with the video (i.e. title and/or keywords).
Blinkx adds another layer, the spoken word. When searching for a video, Blinkx uses a unique combination of patented conceptual search, speech recognition and video analysis software to efficiently find and qualify what is being said in the video.

Blinkx use of visual analysis and speech recognition to better understand rich media content, gives this software a lot of potential as an educational tool. One such use could be for students who watch their courses online using CUTV’s Video on Demand service. If the courses were offered in a Blinkx supported network, it would be possible for students to search their lectures for all instances of a specific topic or phrase, rather than sifting through hours of video.
