Survivor: Carleton

Learn the 5Ws of navigating Carleton, such as what MyCarleton is, who to notify about plagiarism, when the term begins, where to find food on campus and why Carleton?

Survivor: Carleton is intended for new faculty members and new contract instructors only. It is intended as an introduction to the basics of starting your teaching life at Carleton. If you are unsure if you should attend this training day, please contact the Educational Development Centre at 520-4433 or edc@carleton.ca. For 2009/2010, we will be holding two Survivor: Carleton sessions in the summer months - Wednesday, July 15 and Wednesday, August 19.  For more information about these sessions, please check out our events listing below.

At the EDC, we are dedicated to providing you with the information and resources that you need to adjust to your new life at Carleton University. Below you will find links to orientation sessions we hold for new faculty members, as well as a list of additional resources.

New Faculty Orientation

This three-day orientation goes beyond the basics and gives you in-depth information on everything from bringing technology into the classroom to teaching strategies.

For 2009/2010, we will be holding New Faculty Orientation on Tuesday, August 25, Wednesday, August 26 and Thursday, August 27.  Please click here to register for the orientation programs and other new faculty events.  The following is a highlight of what we're planning for this year:

  • BBQ Dinner in the Tory Quad on Wednesday, August 26
  • A tour of Parliament and a Rideau Canal cruise for new faculty and their families on Saturday, August 29
  • Tea with the President at her home on Sunday, August 30

Also new this year, we are thrilled to offer new and relevant sessions throughout the summer and fall/winter terms.  We will be holding a series of “Need to Know Basis” sessions that would have key people from various departments on campus hosting sessions specifically geared towards new faculty members. These topics have been identified by new faculty from previous years as very necessary to know either prior to starting your academic appointment, or in the least, in the first year of your appointment. We will bring these sessions to your attention via email and through your departmental administrator under the banner of ‘New Faculty Orientation: Need to Know Basis Sessions’. You may choose to register for a session that is most convenient for your schedule, but please note that some sessions will only be offered once per term. These are all extremely relevant and important sessions, plus they give you the added benefit of getting to know and connecting with your new fellow colleagues at various points throughout the year.
